How this is worked out
How long would my savings last, country by country?
Your money at your level, ranked.
Money you will bring on the day you stop working. Savings and investments you would draw from, in the dollars of that day. Social Security and other income are not counted.
When you stop working. The cost of each place is raised by US price rises (3.4% a year) until then.
Every place, ranked. Money is in US dollars. Each place is priced for your level and household size from the same figures as the main calculator: the better of that country’s own government bonds and US inflation-linked Treasuries (2.91%), after the tax rules the site uses and the cost of exchanging money. Typical monthly spending is for a typical city at your level, rent included. A place with no city at your level is listed last. Social Security, pensions and rental income are not counted.
Where your money lasts longest. Bars stop at 60 years. A full bar with the words "Interest alone covers it" means the money is never spent down; with "More than 60 years" it lasts past 60 years but the interest alone does not cover it. A figure in brackets is your money as a share of the amount needed to live off the interest alone.
Your answer in words. With US$1,000,000 at the Comfortable level for 2 people, moving this year, the interest alone covers your spending in Fiji, India, Ecuador and other places, so the money is never spent down. In the United States your money lasts 7.1 years.
