A Fixed Foreign Pension Against a Swinging Currency

If the exchange rate moves, how much does their month move with it?

Picture a couple named Dan and Helen. Both are 66. Their Social Security and a small pension come to US$2,000 a month. They are looking at a town where the rent is in local money. They ask a plain question. If the exchange rate moves, how much does their month move with it?

The answer depends on the place. So I looked at what the US Federal Reserve Board published for eight years, 2018 to 2025. These are yearly averages, so they smooth out the bumps inside each year.

The rule that makes this a question

The Social Security Administration says: "We calculate Social Security benefits in U.S. dollars." It also says: "We do not increase or decrease your benefits because of changes in international exchange rates." So the dollar figure holds still. The local figure moves.

What US$2,000 turned into each year

This is my arithmetic: US$2,000 times the yearly average rate.

Year Mexico (MXN) Thailand (THB) South Africa (ZAR) Brazil (BRL) Euro area (EUR)
2018 38,436 64,607 26,451 7,303 1,692
2019 38,494 62,084 28,895 7,888 1,787
2020 43,092 62,614 32,986 10,317 1,753
2021 40,569 64,010 29,550 10,792 1,691
2022 40,242 70,100 32,720 10,321 1,899
2023 35,467 69,568 36,907 9,989 1,849
2024 36,612 70,569 36,669 10,774 1,848
2025 38,410 65,724 35,756 11,178 1,769

How big were the swings

Prices in those countries moved too. The World Bank publishes yearly consumer price change for each place (indicator FP.CPI.TOTL.ZG, updated 8 October 2026):

Year Mexico Thailand South Africa Brazil Euro area United Kingdom
2018 4.90% 1.07% 4.51% 3.66% 1.70% 2.29%
2019 3.64% 0.71% 4.10% 3.73% 1.45% 1.74%
2020 3.40% -0.85% 3.23% 3.21% 0.22% 0.99%
2021 5.69% 1.23% 4.62% 8.30% 2.53% 2.52%
2022 7.90% 6.08% 7.04% 9.28% 8.55% 7.92%
2023 5.53% 1.23% 6.08% 4.59% 5.95% 6.79%
2024 4.72% 0.40% 4.36% 4.37% 2.26% 3.27%
2025 3.81% -0.13% 3.21% 5.02% 2.47% 3.88%

A higher number in a year with higher local prices may buy about the same as before. I have not matched the two tables year by year.

If your pension is in pounds

A UK pension of GBP 1,500 a month, at the same yearly rates, was worth US$1,856 in 2022 and US$2,065 in 2021 (my arithmetic). In Thai baht that was THB 59,451 in 2019 and THB 67,646 in 2024. In Mexican pesos it was MXN 33,091 in 2023 and MXN 41,879 in 2021. Two moving rates are in play when you cross a third currency.

The latest daily rates

On 2 October 2026 the Federal Reserve Board's weekly table showed MXN 18.1920, THB 33.5800 and BRL 5.2222 per US dollar. It also showed USD 1.1259 per euro and USD 1.3234 per pound. The rand was not on that table. These are one-day numbers, not a forecast.

What is left open

You could…

  • Add up one month of spending in the local currency, then see what it costs at the weakest year in the table.
  • Ask your bank or an international transfer provider what rate and fees it would apply on a monthly deposit.
  • Keep a few months of local spending in a local account.
  • Talk to an accountant or lawyer who works with Americans abroad about how a foreign account is reported.

What would a month look like if the rate fell by one tenth tomorrow?

Figures are estimates for planning, based on public data. Date read: 10 October 2026.
