Ghana Residence Permit for Retirees: How Long, and What Is Written

What do they find on the Ghana Immigration Service's own site?

Picture a couple named Dan and Ruth. Both are 63. They have visited Accra twice and want to stay longer. They search for "Ghana retirement permit" and find a lot of talk. What do they find on the Ghana Immigration Service's own site?

What the official pages say

The FAQ says a residence permit "may be obtained for purposes of study, employment, self-employment, studies, retirement, religious activities." That is the only mention of retirement I found. The services list names no retirement permit. The permits on it are for students, companies, missionaries and NGOs, immigrant quota, GIPC, shareholders and dependants.

Question What the page says Page
Time to process "may generally take between 8 to 10 weeks"; no clearly defined times FAQ
Length of permit Up to four years initially. Most are granted for one year in practice FAQ
One fee for all? "There is no one fee for all residence permits" FAQ
Visitor extension "a minimum period of three (3) months initially and a maximum of six (6) months" Extension page
Work on a visitor permit "employment is restricted while on visitor's permit" Extension page

Fees on the fee page

The fee page says "EFFECTIVE 15TH MAY 2025" and uses a rate of GH¢11 to US$1. It has no retirement line. Three lines come closest. The columns are Ghanaians with a foreign passport, ECOWAS citizens and other nationals. For other nationals:

Permit line Other nationals
Immigrant quota US$647
GIPC automatic quota US$500
Work and residence (companies) US$1,293

I do not know which line, if any, a retiree would be placed on. The Service could tell you. The page also links a revised 2026 fee document, which could not be read, so these numbers may have changed.

Staying for good

The page on indefinite residence lists documents. They include two passport photos, a sponsor letter, letters from two Ghanaians with their ID copies, a police report from Ghana and a medical report from the Service's own clinic. Two copies of everything are needed. That page does not say how many years of residence come first, what it costs, or how long it takes. Retirees are not mentioned on it.

What is left open

You could…

  • Write or call the Ghana Immigration Service (+233 302 213 401, info@immigration.gov.gh, as printed on its pages) and ask which permit fits a retiree.
  • Ask for the 2026 fee list.
  • Start collecting a police report and medical papers, since both appear on its lists.

How long would you want a first permit to last?

Figures are estimates for planning, based on public data. Date read: 10 October 2026.
