Watches: Box, Papers and the Trade-in Gap
They agree on direction: the papers are worth keeping.
Picture a family clearing a parent's desk. In the bottom drawer is a good watch, and beside it a box, a warranty card and a folded receipt. Someone asks whether to throw the box away.
Two sources put a number on it. A lender that values watches says pieces with the original box, warranty card and receipts carry a premium of 10% to 30% over undocumented ones, with Patek Philippe at the high end. Two dealer-written guides say 10% to 20%. For lending, the first source suggests a discount of at least 15% to 25% on watches with no papers. These are tier C sources, so read them as trade opinion. They agree on direction: the papers are worth keeping.
Three prices for one watch
The sources describe three different gaps.
| Route | What is reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Dealer trade-in | 80 to 85 cents on the dollar | a lender's report, Aug 2026 |
| Dealer buyout | 70% to 80% of online prices | a dealer's guide |
| Dealer buyout | 30% to 40% below market | a second dealer's guide |
| Pawn shop | 10% to 30% of retail | a UK dealer's guide |
| Forced cash sale of a US$50,000 watch | about US$38,000 to US$42,000 | a lender's report |
| Consignment with a dealer | dealer keeps 15% to 25% | a dealer's guide |
The two dealer guides disagree on the buyout. One says sellers get 70% to 80% of advertised prices. The other says a dealer buyout sits 30% to 40% below market, and calls that the gap between a quick sale and a good private sale. They are describing different dealers, and both are tier C. A range of 60% to 80% of market covers what the sources say.
Selling it yourself
Chrono24's seller commission is reported two ways. One guide says a flat 6.5%. Another says 6.5% up to EUR 2,500, 5.5% up to EUR 10,000 and 4.5% above. Chrono24's own fee page was not among the sources. The same guide says sales take 30 to 60 days there. On eBay, one guide lists 15% on the first US$1,000, 6.5% up to US$7,500 and 3% above, with sales taking 7 to 30 days and authentication required over US$2,000.
At auction, Phillips lists a buyer's premium of 27%, 21% and 14.5% by price band from April 2026, per a fee directory. The buyer pays that on top of the hammer, so the seller does not.
The market under all of it
Prices have moved. Figures from WatchCharts, cited by a lender, show the used-watch index up about 8.2% in the 12 months to February 2026. Rolex rose 7.9% and Patek 16.2%, and prices were still below their peak. The same source puts the average Rolex resale at about US$7,185 before the pandemic and US$17,206 at the March 2022 peak. One discontinued Patek model that sold new for about US$34,000 trades now between roughly US$113,600 and US$147,700. That is one model, not the market.
For tax, a US sale is a collectibles gain with a 28% maximum rate when held over a year. In the UK, most possessions worth GBP 6,000 or more are chargeable. In Canada, a watch is ordinary personal-use property, not listed personal property.
You might say: "My watch has no box, so none of this applies." It still does. The papers can be a receipt, a service record or a warranty card. Whether yours is complete is a fact you can look up in the drawer.
You could set aside the box, the card and any receipts before any dealer visit, and ask for two offers.
Who in your family wears a watch that came from someone else, and what do you know about where it came from? Share it here. Someone may be holding a box they almost threw out.
Figures are estimates for planning, based on public data. Date read: October 2026.
