Home Help in Ecuador: What the Official Pages Say About Pay and Paperwork
They would like to, and they want to know what is fair and what the law asks of them.
Picture a couple named Martin and Joyce. They are 64 and thinking about a flat in Cuenca. They have never had anyone help at home. They would like to, and they want to know what is fair and what the law asks of them.
I looked for an official price for home help. None was found. What I found are the building blocks: the national wage floor, the trial period, and how a household registers a worker.
What I could confirm
| Item | What the page says | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| General basic wage for 2026 | US$482 a month, agreed by government, employers and workers (title of the Ministry of Labour announcement; the same figure is the base column in the Comptroller's 2026 wage tables) | Ministry of Labour; Contraloría General |
| Domestic worker basic wage, 2023 | US$450 a month, set by a 2022 ministerial agreement (as quoted in a note to the Labour Code copy) | Labour Code copy on a government site |
| Trial period for home help | Up to fifteen days | Labour Code, Art. 15 |
| General maximum workday | Eight hours, 40 a week (the text I read does not say if it applies to home help) | Labour Code, Art. 47 |
| Social security | Employers must enrol workers from the first day | Labour Code, Art. 42 |
The social security institute (IESS) says a household that employs a domestic worker registers online as an employer. It then gets an employer key at one of its service centres and files an entry notice for the worker. The page I read gave no contribution rate for domestic work. The 20.60% rate on that page is for ordinary private employees: 9.45% from the worker and 11.15% from the employer. I do not know if it applies to domestic work.
For the 2026 floor for home help, a search extract of the Ministry of Labour's own page, read 11 October 2026, says the general basic wage "includes" paid household workers and is US$482 from 1 January 2026. I show that as the extract it is, and the Ministry's page is the place to read the exact words. The 2023 figure of US$450 above was set separately, so the household floor has moved with the general wage in the years I could see.
What is left open
- Working hours and rest days specific to home help. The Labour Code has a chapter on household work, and the copy I read did not include it.
- The contribution rate for household workers at the social security institute.
- What households actually pay in Cuenca, Quito or on the coast. That is a market price, and no ministry publishes it.
- Anything about medical visits without Spanish. This article is about pay and paperwork.
You could…
- Ask IESS in writing what the contribution rate is for home help, and the Ministry of Labour to confirm the 2026 floor in writing.
- Ask a lawyer in Ecuador who works with foreign residents to confirm hours and rest days.
- Ask neighbours how many hours they use and what the contract says, then compare it with the official floor.
How many hours of help a week would make your days easier?
Figures are estimates for planning, based on public data. Date read: 10 and 11 October 2026.
