Reading a Car Price: What Is Inside the Number
Knowing what is inside it lets you compare it with a price in another country.
Picture a man named Ed, 68, in front of a Toyota price list. He sees one figure for a Corolla. He wonders what is inside it.
Different countries show prices differently. Here are three examples we found on Toyota's own pages on 8 October 2026.
United Kingdom
Toyota's price list breaks the Corolla into pieces.
| Piece | Amount in GBP |
|---|---|
| Basic price | 24,665.83 |
| Value added tax (20%) | 4,933.17 |
| Delivery and number plates | 826.00 |
| List price | 30,425 |
The on-the-road price of GBP 30,845 adds the first year of road tax and the registration fee.
Turkey
The list price of TRY 2,545,500 includes a special consumption tax, value added tax and the year's motor tax. The same page shows a campaign price of TRY 1,965,000 under the heading "prices exempt from the special consumption tax." That is about 23 percent below the list price, which hints at how much of the tag is that tax.
Japan
The Corolla price includes a 10 percent consumption tax. Weight tax, annual car tax and registration costs are separate.
What to look for
| Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does the price include sales tax or value added tax? | In many countries it adds 10 to 25 percent |
| Is it on the road or ex-factory? | Registration and road tax can add thousands |
| Does it include delivery? | Practices differ by country and seller |
| Is it a promotional price? | Rebates may expire |
In India, the on-road price in Mumbai for a Camry was about 19 percent higher than the ex-showroom price (INR 58.09 lakh against 48.69 lakh).
You could…
-
Ask the seller for the total, with every tax and fee itemized.
-
Ask what you will pay each year after the purchase.
-
Compare totals across countries in one currency on the same day.
