How Long Could You Stay Away From the UAE Before Your Residence Visa Ends?

How long could we be away before the visa stops?

Picture a couple named Dennis and Carol. Both are 64. They are thinking of a residence visa in the UAE, but they also want to spend the summer with family in Ohio and a few weeks each winter touring. They ask one question. How long could we be away before the visa stops?

The UAE government portal gives a clear number. It also lists several groups who are treated differently. And a separate page from the federal identity authority describes a permit for people who stay away longer. I read both. Where the two differ, I show both.

The general rule

The UAE government portal (u.ae) says that if a resident "lives outside the UAE for more than 180 days continuously, his/her residence visa will be nullified automatically." After that, the person has to apply for a new entry permit to come back in.

Two details matter here. The page says "continuously", so the count is about one unbroken stay abroad. The page does not say what a short visit back in would do to the count. No official page in the sources confirms that.

Who is treated differently

The same portal page lists groups who can stay abroad longer than six months and keep a valid visa. In my reading of its summary, they include:

Retirees are not on that list. A retiree could be covered if he or she holds one of the visas below.

The long residence types: two pages, two wordings

Question u.ae (general provisions page) ICP permit page
Is the Golden Visa an exception to the 6-month rule? Not listed as an exception Golden, Green and Blue residence holders "may enter at any time while their residence remains valid"
Entry without the permit Golden and green residency holders "can enter the country directly at any time as long as their residency is valid" Same idea, and Blue is added

The two pages are close but not the same. One says the Golden Visa is not on the exception list. Both say holders of those residencies can enter at any time while the residency is valid. I do not pick between them. An accountant or lawyer who works with Americans abroad, or the ICP itself, could confirm what applies to a given visa.

If you stay away more than six months: the permit

ICP describes the service as "Issuance of a permit for residents staying outside the UAE for more than six (6) months." In summary:

For a Dubai resident who stays away too long, no official page in the sources says what the route is. The Dubai residency office (GDRFA) page I read did not address it.

What is left open

You could…

  • Add up your longest single stay abroad in a normal year, and compare it with 180 days.
  • Ask the ICP, or an accountant or lawyer who works with Americans abroad, which category your visa falls in.
  • Check whether the investor, Golden, Green or Blue residence applies to your situation.

Is your longest trip away in a normal year shorter or longer than six months?

Figures are estimates for planning, based on public data. Date read: 10 October 2026.
